FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my dental insurance cover my visit?

Most insurance companies will cover all or a portion of your dental procedure, it depends on your specific dental plan. The most common plans will cover routine care at 100%, with more in-depth procedures covered at a portion. Our office would be happy to gather a breakdown of your dental benefits to help you maximize your yearly benefits.

Dr. Hawkins bills to most all insurances and we can obtain a pre-treatment estimate to determine your specific copay amounts.

Does the dentist have emergency hours?

Yes, Dr. Hawkins offers emergency dental appointments. Examples of dental emergencies are a broken tooth, swelling, infected gum, or hot/cold sensitivity. Please call our office if you think you’re having a dental issue

At what age should parents start to bring their children in for their first dental check-up?

We recommend to the parent to start their child at an appropriate time in which the child is able to sit in the dental chair and is willing to allow us to polish and examine their teeth. We often tell the parents that they know their child better than anyone else and know if their child would be willing to follow instructions of the Dentist or Dental Hygienist. We explain to the parents that we have an age range of 3 to 5 years and that most schools require that your child have a dental exam before starting to school as part of their overall health assessment.

What is the best way to maintain your teeth?

Prevention is the key to good oral health and it starts with prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) visits that have been recommended by your Dental Hygienist and or Dentist. Everyone has different dental needs when it comes to preventive dental care. We do a thorough and comprehensive evaluation on your first visit with us. We collect information about your oral health, overall health, and design treatment for your specific needs. We will set you up on a recall system every 3, 4, or 6 months based on your periodontal health(the health of your teeth, bone, and gums). It is important to have a healthy mouth in order to have a healthy body.

What are the teeth whitening options offered to our patients?

One teeth whitening option is to have impressions of teeth taken so that we can make you upper and lower bleaching trays, we include your choice of 10%, 15% bleaching solutions. Another option for our patients is “Opalescence to go” pre-filled bleach trays that are a one time use and include an upper and lower tray. These can be purchased separately or in a box of ten.

Which is better: A manual toothbrush or an electric one?

Both traditional and electric toothbrushes can get the job done. The most important thing is not which brush you use but how you use it. With either type, it’s important to brush at least twice a day for about 2 minutes each time. With a manual brush you should brush up and down on the outside of teeth and inside. Each electric brush comes with directions specific to that brush.

If movement in your hands is difficult due to arthritis or other issue, an electric brush may be the best product for you. Mobility is not as critical to get a thorough brushing. Ask your hygienist for more information during your next scheduled appointment with Hawkins Dentistry. We’re always happy to help our patients achieve good daily oral hygiene habits.

What kind of toothpaste should I use?

There are a lot of products to choose from, and much of the decision depends on individual preference. A fluoride toothpaste is essential for optimal oral health.

Is flossing really that important?

Yes, it really is. Proper flossing removes plaque from between teeth and at the gum line where periodontal disease often begins. Brushing alone cannot reach these areas. Brush twice, floss once every day for good oral and dental health.

Do I really need to come in every 6 months for a checkup and cleaning?

That is the minimum recommended by the American Dental Association. For patients who smoke, have diabetes, gum disease or are pregnant additional visits may be needed. Beyond ensuring an excellent dental cleaning, Dr. Hawkins’ examination will help detect any other oral health issues such as gum disease, oral cancer, bite disorders and cavities. He can then recommend a treatment program.
